My husband, Keith, and I recently attended the funeral of a 28 year old, young man who had his life cut short in a tragic plane accident. It really hit me as I saw all of his young friends and family, that we all need to live in the moment. It’s so important to take in and appreciate what is available to us and happening with us right now.

I’m sure you’ve all heard Tim McGraw’s country western song "Live Like You Were Dyin’ ". It’s so true. We take so much for granted and waste so much time worrying about what was and what will be and we forget to enjoy what is – the present.

Have you stopped lately to think about what you’re missing out on? So often we get caught up in a job we don’t like, can’t figure out how to get ahead or what to do after a job loss. We forget about relationships or take them for granted. Rather than making time to spend with parents, kids, spouses or old friends, we just keep doing the things we’ve always done and don’t figure out how to nurture those relationships.

A friend of mine, Leslie Charles (author, motivational speaker, manuscript
writer and jewelry maker) used to talk about her struggle to complete her college degree. I remember her saying that she finally realized that she had no control over whether or not she was going to get to 40 years old. However, she did have a choice as to whether or not she would have a college degree when she was 40. If I remember correctly, she actually received her degree when she was 40.

The choice is yours.

I’ve also noticed recently the number of people who say, “I love you” or just
love you” at the end of a phone conversation. Initially, it really bugged me. It
often sounded so empty and insincere. However, I’ve come to realize that no
matter how insincere, if it’s the last words heard or said between those two
people, that’s all that matters.

Toby Keith, my “boyfriend”, (yes, Keith knows about it, unfortunately, Toby
doesn’t) also makes a point in his song “Under the Old Glass Paperweight”:

Go for a walk, say a little prayer, take a deep breath of mountain air,
put on my glove, and play some catch, it's time that I make time for that.
Wade the shore, cast a line, look up an old lost friend of mine
sit on the porch, and give my girl a kiss, start living
That's the next thing on my list.

Raise a little Hell, laugh till it hurts, put an extra five in the plate at
church, call up my folks just to chat, it's time that I make time for that.
Stay up late and oversleep, show her what she means to me, catch up on all
the things I've always missed, just start living
That's the next thing on my list.
Under an old brass paper weight is my list of things to do today.

What's on "your list" of things to do today?

Sports Spouses - The Challenge of Being a Coach's Wife

Being a coach’s wife takes a special person. You automatically become the CEO of your household and family. You are the “glue” that holds it all together. When it’s time to move, you make all the arrangements. When it comes to dealing with the kids issues at school, you deal with the teachers. When it comes to soothing your spouse’s bruised ego after a loss, you’re the one who’s there for them.

When recently working with a group of coaches’ wives and asking the top three to five challenges of being a coach’s wife, the number one reason was loneliness followed by work/life balance, limited family time, lack of communication and dealing with change. Sound familiar?

Being a coach’s wife may be fulfilling enough for some women, but not for others. That certainly doesn’t mean that they don’t love their husbands or that they’re not supportive. It may just mean that they also need to be fulfilled as a person themselves. By working with a coach, women would have an opportunity to find out what it is that fulfills them. In addition, they can share experiences and build camaraderie.

Coaching is an opportunity for the wives to identify their own goals and issues, develop a plan for obtaining them and be held accountable.
